Replanting New Roots on Home Soil

The original home at 1118 Hudson was a 1920’s traditional Virginia Highlands Bungalow. It had a long front sitting porch, three small bedrooms and two baths. After living through a few unsuccessful renovations, it was determined the home’s foundation was in too bad a shape to endure another one. The Daniels decided to do a complete teardown. With the help of a supportive neighborhood and some very talented neighbors, a memorial of the old home was built in its place. The architect, Noni’s neighbor, walked through the highlands with Noni assessing neighborhood styles, then drew up the blueprint for the new house. The Daniels didn’t want a “McMansion”, merely a hardier hybrid of its predecessor. The plans were accepted with very little changes. Digging down to the old home’s roots the Daniels were able to complete a full basement with an office, sitting room, and creative workspace for Noni. What grew from the ground after that has many features from the original home, like the arched door and framed windows that commemorate the arched door of the original house. Ten-foot ceilings, tall expansive doors and windows open the space to bring more of the outside in, with light filling every room. The kitchen is a wonderland for any chef with a huge black limestone center island surrounded by white marble countertops and top-of-the-line appliances. The stair-steps down into the living area were a design element created to bring the eye closer to the outside. The French doors open to a wrap around back porch perfect for outside dining and entertaining. The new home has four bedrooms and four baths. The house is filled with unique antiques, like the Victorian doorbell, and chamber pot case at the inside entry. Earthy tones and green plants fill you with comfort, while simple touches of beauty capture your eye in a way only a floral designer like Noni could do.
